A NOTE BEFORE YOU READ

Everything in this document happened. Every challenge, every decision, every moment of doubt and determination is true. This isn't a cover letter. It isn't a resume. It's the story of how a kid from Texas who lost his father young, watched his family navigate grief in their own ways, outworked every swimmer in his lane, spent a decade serving people with his voice and coaching others to exceed their own limits — and then one day decided his hands and his mind had more to give — became a designer who learned early that the most powerful thing you can do for a brand isn't make it beautiful. It's make it mean something to the humans it exists for.

This is By Design. Nothing in here is accidental.

THE ROOT

Before the design. Before the pool. Before any of it — there was a family that taught him everything worth knowing about showing up for people.

His father passed away when Derek was nine years old. You know what happens when you cook popcorn too long in a microwave? That smell. It changes the whole room before you even open the door. And then you see the aftermath — standing there asking if it's fixable. Grief is like that. It arrives before you're ready, changes everything about the space you're standing in, and lingers longer than anyone tells you it will. At an age when most children are learning to ride bikes and memorizing baseball stats, Derek was learning something harder and more important — what it means to lose someone, and what it means to keep going anyway.

Grief touches everyone differently. Not every family member finds their way through it the same. What Derek took from it wasn't bitterness. It was resilience. And a quiet refusal to let circumstances define the ceiling.

His mother spent decades as a nurse — showing up every single day for her patients and her family. She demonstrated through her work what it looked like to dedicate yourself to making others feel seen and cared for. She never once made her children feel like they couldn't have anything anyone else had just because there was one leader not two. The relationship was complicated. Most of the ones that shape us are. But the lesson took root anyway.

The need to make the people in front of you feel like they actually matter — that was something he decided early. Not because it was always modeled for him. Because he knew what it felt like when it wasn't.

THE POOL

Derek wanted to leave Texas. His mother told him he could — if he earned it.

So swimming became his life. Not because it was easy. Not because he was the most talented in the water. But because he decided that outworking everyone else in the pool was something he could control. Every morning. Every practice. Every stroke. He made a decision — not once, but every single day — to be the hardest working person in the lane.

Junior year. State qualifying meet. He needed a breath. He took it. One hundredth of a second. The margin between qualifying and going home. One breath he shouldn't have taken.

One hundredth of a second.
One breath.
One decision that changed everything.

He didn't take that breath again.

Senior year. Different story entirely.

Undefeated in the 50 and 100 freestyle. State qualifier. 8th in the state of Texas in the 50 yard freestyle. 5th in the state in the 100 yard freestyle. Not first. But enough. More than enough. A Division 1 scholarship earned on pure will, pure discipline, and the decision to eliminate doubt from his stroke.

He left Texas the way his mother said he could. He earned it.

There was a Switchfoot song that found him when he needed it most. He started high school swimming as a freshman in 2002. Two years later — his sophomore year, the same year that song was released — he became seriously ill and had to step away from school and swimming for half a semester. The song arrived in that silence. Not loud. Not urgent. Just words that said keep going. He never stopped listening to it before the moments that mattered. Before every race after that. Before every interview. Before every moment that required more of him than the last. That story belongs somewhere else in this series — but it starts here, in the water, in 2002, before everything that came after.

What the pool taught him never stayed in the pool. The gap between good and great is a single decision. Doubt is a breath you don't have to take — needed, but only at the right time and the right moment. And the standard you hold yourself to when nobody is watching is the only standard that matters.

THE COACH

From 2011 to 2020, Derek did two things simultaneously — used his voice in the corporate world and used his expertise to pour into other people as a competitive swim coach.

He coached ages six to eighteen. Competitive swimmers learning to push past their limits, to trust their training, to find that extra half second they didn't know they had. He ran private lessons on the side. And in the summers, he branched into something that showed exactly who he was — teaching adults who were afraid of the water.

Not children. Adults. People who had carried a fear their entire lives and finally decided they were done carrying it. People who needed someone to meet them exactly where they were — not where they should be, not where everyone else was — and help them discover something in themselves they didn't know existed.

Meet them where they are. Build trust. Create the conditions for them to exceed what they thought was possible. That's coaching. That's also exactly what great design does for a brand.

You read a person completely. You understand their fear, their limitations, their untapped potential. You build trust slowly, deliberately, without rushing. And then you create the conditions for a breakthrough — one that belongs entirely to them, not to you. But here's the thing nobody tells you about coaching. When that lightbulb moment arrived — when you watched someone discover something in themselves they didn't know was there — the goosebumps weren't theirs alone. He felt it too. Every single time. That's not ownership. That's connection.

The pool taught him discipline. Coaching gave that something a place to go.

THE SERVICE

The service heart didn't stay in the coaching lanes. It found its way into the community.

As Site Manager at GRACE Grapevine — working in partnership with a local church — Derek built a donation site from the ground up, modeled after and working in tandem with their established home location. He designed the intake workflow, established sorting standards, created alternative giving pathways, and managed volunteers and donors with the same precision he brought to every operation he's ever touched.

He also learned how to drive a 26-foot truck plastered with GRACE marketing all over it. He took pride in driving that truck — even when curb check became the norm. Nobody handed him a manual. He figured it out, showed up, and did the work.

He also served as a liaison for allocating church benevolence funds — sitting across from community members in need, hearing their situations, and helping connect them with resources that could change the direction of their lives. Not processing paperwork. Meeting people. Human to human.

This is where the brand philosophy was being lived before it had a name. Connection over transaction. People over process. Showing up fully for the humans in front of you — regardless of what they can give back.

THE VOICE

For nearly a decade, Derek was the face of companies he believed in — through his voice. Nonprofit customer service. Medical. For-profit accreditation. Corporate environments where the human on the other end of the phone was the entire experience.

He was good at it. His voice carried warmth, competence, and the kind of calm that people remember long after the call ends.

But somewhere in those years — sitting at a desk, typing, talking, solving — a thought started forming. Quiet at first. Then louder.

There has to be more to life than this.

He knew it. He felt it every day. The creative brain doesn't rest — it observes, connects, imagines, and builds even when it's not being asked to. While his voice was serving companies, his mind was designing solutions nobody had asked for yet.

One day he stopped waiting for someone to ask.

I can do more than this.

That was the decision. Everything after it made sense.

THE DECISION

Going back to school as an adult isn't easy. It requires a particular kind of courage — the kind that admits there's more to learn while still trusting what you already know. Derek enrolled at Dallas College for Digital Art and Design. Not as a fallback. As a deliberate bet on himself.

The same determination that earned a Division 1 swimming scholarship earned a design education. The same discipline that made him undefeated his senior year made him one of the most focused students in the program. He wasn't there to get a degree. He was there to build a craft.

The same person who outworked every swimmer in that pool sat down at a computer and decided to outwork every designer in the room.

Two professors changed how he thought. Byron taught him that the principles of design are just as important as the feeling being portrayed — that craft and emotion aren't opposites, they're partners. Brett taught him that some of the best work comes from accidents. That it's okay to be human. That the beauty of art lives not just in the finished piece but in the journey to the end of the paint drying. Brett loved to talk about this point — but he was never afraid to show the skill to be worked better next time. He practiced what he preached.

Dallas College wasn't a stepping stone. It was the bridge between a decade of understanding people through his voice and a career of serving them through his work. The sociology degree from North Carolina State gave him the framework for understanding how humans connect. The design education gave him the tools to build those connections visually.

Two degrees. Two disciplines. One through-line — people.

THE ARENA

His first paying design job was Venture Commercial Real Estate. And on his first day he walked into something most designers never face — not a struggling department, not a disorganized one. One that simply needed a fresh start. What remained was one part-time freelancer who showed up when he could, and Derek. That was the creative department. For an entire year.

Most people would have been overwhelmed. Derek recognized the feeling — he'd been here before. Different water. Different race. Same choice.

This time he took the breath at the right time.

It tested him — not just his established work ethic but himself as a professional. The answer turned out to be the same person who outworked everyone in the pool. The one who shows up. Every single time. Regardless of what the room looks like when he gets there.

In his first year he partnered with the COO, Lynett — a strong woman with a direct point of view and the instincts to get things done with purpose and integrity. They were in sync professionally from the start. Not quick decisions but thorough conversations — what's working, what isn't, and how do we find the solution together. They built the workflow system that would carry the department forward, refining and evolving it as the operation grew.

He helped design the processes that streamlined how 50+ brokers, 6 project managers, and a full executive suite — CEO, COO, founding and executive partners — worked together. He didn't just deliver design. He designed the conditions that made everything around him perform at a higher level.

And the work itself became the visual voice behind multi-million dollar conversations. The email campaigns, offering memorandums, flyers, window ads, and large-scale conference materials that walked into a room before anyone shook a hand or signed a lease. For Raising Cane's. Academy Sports + Outdoors. The Star. Legacy West. National brands and premier mixed-use developments that trusted his design to be their first impression.

He wasn't supporting the deal. He was starting it.

He led a company-wide brand guidelines rebrand from concept to execution. He produced 500+ aerial property maps and delivered at every scale — from precision email design to large-format national and international conference productions — without losing brand consistency or creative quality at either end.

And then he built Derek Ernst Designs. His own operation. Running enterprise-level brand compliance for Methodist Health System while simultaneously building a startup brand from the ground up — authoring their complete visual identity, workflows, and guidelines from scratch.

The work did what it was supposed to do.

THE PHILOSOPHY

Everything Derek has built — the discipline from the pool, the empathy from coaching, the human understanding from a decade in service, the community work at GRACE, the systems thinking from Venture, the ground-up brand building from his freelance work — points to one belief:

Brands don't build loyalty. Connections do. And the best brands are the ones that start conversations between humans that no algorithm can manufacture and no budget can buy.

He doesn't design for demographics. He designs for real people, real moments, and the space between what a brand says and what its audience actually feels. That gap — the distance between what a brand says and what a human actually feels — is where he lives. Closing it is the work.

The brands worth building aren't the loudest ones. They're the ones people can't stop talking about, connecting over, and building their lives around. The ones that earn a place in someone's life not because they marketed their way in but because they meant something real when they arrived.

He hasn't always gotten it right. Nobody who has lived fully has. But the accountability was always there when it mattered. That's not a disclaimer. That's just honest. And there's still more to learn. More to grow. More to understand about the humans on the other side of every brief. That's not a weakness. That's the whole point. The beauty of this work — like the beauty of life — is that it never really finishes. It just gets better.

That's the standard. Not attention. Not impressions. Not campaigns. A place in people's lives. A feeling they keep coming back to. And when a brand gives people that feeling — when someone can't explain why a brand moves them but they just know it does — that's not marketing. That's loyalty. And loyalty, built with intention, doesn't just capture attention.

It builds legacies.
